How do I estimate moving costs?

Estimating the cost of moving to a new home involves a lot of variables. Here are some major move cost factors…

  • Move size – larger moves are more expensive
  • Distance – the longer the distance the more the move will cost
  • Do-it-yourself vs Pro Mover – DIY is usually cheaper
  • Time of year – because it’s peak season
  • Moving date – moving prices tend to be more affordable middle of the week and middle of the month
  • Specialty items – piano, pool tables, hot tubs, motorcycles, safes, etc. are expensive to move
  • Additional costs – packing supplies, long carry charges, full packing, unpacking, shuttle truck fees, travel fees
Do cross country movers charge by weight or volume?

Moving companies can charge by weight or volume but as a general rule of thumb if you haven’t worked with the mover before then it’s best to avoid cubic footage estimates. DIY CROSS COUNTRY MOVING – AT WHAT COST

If you’re willing to do all the heavy lifting and driving you can usually save yourself a good chunk of change on the total cost of the move. You’ll also have more control over the moving process which some people prefer.

The two main DIY options are rental trucks and moving containers. Let’s take a quick look at the estimated costs for each option.

How much does it cost to rent a portable storage container?

Moving containers are like a portable storage unit that can be delivered to your house, loaded, and then shipped or stored local or long distance.  But please keep in mind – these moving containers are known to get lost, vandalized, have rodent issues and damage rates are 10x  more than a private long distance moving company.

The average total cost to move within 50 miles with a portable moving container is typically around $800 to $900 for one container plus you will have to pay for the labor and material which will be another $800-1000.  The prices will add up quickly and usually are within a $100 difference of hiring full service long distance movers.

For interstate moves, average moving container prices can range from $1900 to $7500+ depending on the distance and size of the move. Generally, the longer the distance, the more expensive things get. If the company doesn’t have a nearby location at your destination, that can also ramp up the price. How much do moving truck rentals costs?

Another, major cost you’ll want to calculate ahead of time is fuel. Moving rental trucks typically get on average 8-12 miles per gallondepending on the size of the truck and whether it’s full or empty with home goods. For example, a fully loaded 26-foot rental truck is likely to get no more than 7 or 8 miles per gallon, while an empty 10-foot truck will get closer to 12 to 15 MPG. Fuel costs can easily add up to hundreds of dollars.

Put simply, moving costs vary. The final price of your move will depend on a number of considerations:

  • The amount of belongings you’ll be moving
  • The distance of your move
  • The time of year
  • The moving services you require
  • Whether or not you’ll hire professionals to assist at any stage during your move

Because there are so many variables at play, we can’t offer a definitive amount you should expect to pay. We can, however, offer price ranges for common moving scenarios to give you a general point of comparison.

OVERVIEW OF CROSS COUNTRY MOVING COSTS

The average cost of a long distance move is much more complicated mostly because of the distances traveled.  Here are a few of the considerations included in the cost of an average long distance move.

  1. Rate Per Pound – This is probably the most important factor when considering the average cost of a long distance move.  This is essentially the rate per pound that you are paying for your items to be shipped.  This rate changes depending on it’s own set of details:
    1. Destination City
    2. Origin City
    3. Distance Between the Destination and Origin
    4. Demand – The demand for shipments going from Boston to DC is going to be higher than Boston to Norther Maine.  Therefore, the average long distance moving rates will be more going from Boston to Maine.
  2. Price of Fuel – Many long distance movers add a fuel surcharge onto their long distance moving costs.  As the fuel fee decreases, the fuel surcharge should decrease.  Some movers incorporate the fuel surcharge into their rate per pound ( recommended).
  3. Guaranteed Dates – If a guaranteed pick up date and/or delivery date is required, the average cost of a long distance move will change drastically.
